Discovery call: what it means for a creative studio.

A discovery call is an early conversation between a studio and a prospective client to understand the project, the goals and the budget before a quote is prepared.

What it is for

A discovery call turns a vague inquiry into a quotable project. The studio asks about goals, audience, timeline, budget range and who decides. The client learns how the studio works. By the end, both sides should know whether the project is a fit and what a sensible scope of work looks like.

Running it well

Keep it short, often 20 to 30 minutes, and send the questions beforehand if you can. Listen for what the client is really trying to achieve, which is often different from the deliverable they named. Close with a clear next step: when the quote will arrive and what happens after.

  • Agree the purpose and length at the start
  • Ask about budget range directly, early
  • Confirm who approves the work
  • End with a date for the quote

When to skip it

A call is not free for either side. For clear, small, repeatable work, a good written exchange can replace it. Qualifying the lead first, as described under lead qualification, keeps calls for projects worth the time.

Where Viznerve fits

Viznerve reads the inquiry, scores it hot, warm or cold, and drafts the reply, which can include the questions you would otherwise ask on the call. After the call, it drafts the follow-up if the lead goes quiet. See follow up automatically.
